The Pink Elephant Problem
Itâs hard to fall asleep when your mind and emotions churn with angry thoughts. You may add a layer of difficulty falling asleep when you command yourself to sleep. If you tell yourself something like I must fall asleep. I must fall asleep, you are less likely to fall asleep. Then you tell yourself that you must stop thinking that way or youâll stay awake. Welcome to the pink elephant problem. The harder you figuratively clench your fists to forget the elephant, the more likely the elephant will stay in mind.
To help yourself past the dilemma, imagine three words like âI must sleepâ as composed of small wooden letters spreading apart and drifting in a receding tide. Imagine the letters bobbing in the water.
Relieving the early stress part of the stress-anger-stress cycle has multiple other benefits. A relaxed body and adequate quality sleep can raise your threshold for stress by lowering your stress glass level.
