Advocate for yourself. If you really feel like things aren’t going well, or that the therapist or doctor doesn’t listen to or respect you, make a change. While therapy can be challenging, it shouldn’t feel like a huge punishment every time you sit down on the couch. A good therapist should listen to you when you have concerns, and understand why something isn’t working for you. I saw a therapist for a bit and I felt like I wasn’t making any progress, so I expressed that. She understood my concerns and made adjustments to how she approached our sessions.

Sometimes there is this feeling that because the therapist is the professional, you can’t ever question them or what they’re doing. But since you’re seeing them only in short doses, it’s okay to want to make the most of that time, and want to be with someone who will respect you during it.
