Chapter 31

The cores cheered raucously among themselves.

<It’s about time that trap killed somebody!> Stalvern shouted. <Great thinking, Miri!>

Miriette’s core shuddered with pride.

While the others absorbed the corpses and reset the traps, Jardoban watched the gaggle of delvers outside. Some of them were with the Phandroan Navy, but Varia was still nowhere to be seen. For all he knew, she was just outside of their area of influence, and had been the entire time.

Groups entered the dungeon at a steady rate. The next group felt much faster, as did the group that entered after them. For most of them, it was their first time entering the dungeon, as well as their last.

However, for every few groups who entered, there were a handful of survivors who would flee back to the surface. They often had panicked looks on their faces as they recounted to other delvers how their comrades had died within. Whether they wanted to intimidate those who had yet to enter the dungeon, or provide them with intel so that they might succeed where others failed, Jardoban could never tell.

Over the next few days, they maintained their tie with Taanvi, narrowly failing at every opportunity to claim a solitary first place. By the time the first week was nearing its end, their tie remained at twenty-eight kills each. Jagdroth was in third with twenty-one kills, while Chazus was in fourth with nineteen. All it would take for either to claim the lead was a couple of party wipes.

<Jagdroth has reached Amethyst-1!> Bannu bellowed. <Chazus has reached Emerald-1! The competition continues!>

Jardoban was certain that they were close to reaching Topaz-11 at this point. Any random kill ought to bring them over the threshold. They hadn’t discussed which upgrades to take lately, which made him think that the others still wanted Basic Dungeon Spellcasting.

Perhaps he would acquiesce and allow them to take it, if only so that they could take a more active role in the dungeon. Currently, being forced into the role of a passive observer whenever he wasn’t possessing a mob frustrated him, especially when it came to the competition.

Another two kills from the latest group—Oshulda and the gliders made short work of them—brought them ahead of Taanvi, while the rest successfully fled the dungeon.

They didn’t celebrate. It was as if they all knew that to do so would invite bad luck, in the form of entire parties either prevailing over their dungeon or dying in Taanvi’s.

On the last day of the first week, just as a delver fell to a hail of barbs, a notification appeared.

Congratulations! You have reached Topaz-11!
