In bed that night, I found myself smiling and thinking how perfect it had been for Jace to share in that special time with us. I guessed Christmas really was a magical time full of miracles.
Chapter Seven
Jace
Unsurprisingly, the kids had gone down without a fuss, barely making it until their father got home. They hadnât been cranky after school, but theyâd definitely been more on the sleepy side. When Mitch had arrived, heâd asked if I minded waiting while he read them a story, then had popped back into the living room after only five minutes, saying they were sound asleep. Then he asked me to wait while he changed his clothes really quickly.
My mind ping-ponged between concern that I had actually overstepped last night and wishing that heâd have stayed in his suit. If I had thought he looked hot in it, that was nothing compared to the way his sweatpants hugged his thick legs. Werenât fathers supposed to have unattractive dad bods?
Okay, truthfully, he did have a dad body, but there wasnât a damn thing wrong with it. He had the small pooch for a stomach from hours behind a desk, and the wider width that seemed to come with age, but damn, that hadnât impacted his ass in a negative way at all. It would be perfect to hold onto while he slammed intoâ
Okay, I really needed my brain to knock it off. This man was my employer. He paid me to watch his kids, not lust after him. Which circled me back around to worrying. Heâd honestly seemed happy that Iâd taken it upon myself to get the tree and hang the lights, and his offer for me to stay and help decorate had to have been genuine since he got sneaky and asked the kids if they wanted me to. But that didnât mean that when he started telling the kids stories about Brandy and their lives together, I shouldnât have made my excuses to leave.
It shouldâve been an intimate time for their family, but Max had curled up in my lap, andâ¦honestly, Iâd been curious. The children had come to mean so much to me, and I wanted to know about the woman whoâd left such a hole in Mitchâs life and heart.
It was unacceptable to care about his well-being this way. I knew that, but⦠Sheâd been beautiful with long wavy brown hair and big brown doe eyes. In her and Mitchâs pictures from before the children were born, theyâd both been so young and carefree, radiating their devotion to each other. With the addition of each baby, theyâd shown the maturity of age, and so much happiness and joy.
Iâd never asked Mitch how sheâd died because I didnât need to know. However it had happened, it was a tragedy. Which was why I needed to get over this boneheaded crush I had on him. His affection for his wife had laced every word he uttered about her. It had only been two years, and he was still trying to figure his life out.
