IT TECHNICALLY ONLY took three hours to drive to Logan from Minneapolis, but Terry soon learned that was a measurement of time that didn’t include Evan Myles.

Getting loaded into the company SUV was difficult enough. Terry hadn’t brought that many things, having sent all his bulky items ahead, leaving him with little more than a large duffel. Evan was another matter. Terry had thought they could take Evan’s things to the office and transfer them to the SUV, but when he saw how much Evan intended to take, he changed his plans and took his car over to pick up the other vehicle, leaving his keys with Levi, then came back to Evan’s condo to load up. Evan tried to help, but Terry feared that balance issue and insisted on doing it all himself. When he finished, Evan treated him to an iced mocha from the deli, and at last they were on the road.

They weren’t more than fifteen minutes out of town before Evan saw an interesting advertisement on a billboard for an upcoming town, and suddenly they were planning a side trip to stop at an incredibly random and slightly sketchy antique mall. This happened again near Rush City and Moose Lake, but once they left the interstate and began heading north on the narrow country roads taking them to Logan, things went decidedly off the chain.

“I love these tall trees so thick and close.” Evan craned his head nearly upside down to peer at the line of pine trees standing sentry beside the highway. “There’s nothing like this in California—there are the redwood forests, yes, but it’s not like this. Nothing is like this.”

“So that’s where you’re from, California?”

“Yes. From a small town three hours northeast of the Los Angeles metro area. Oh, there’s somewhere selling honey. We have to stop.”

They did stop—at the honey stand, at a farmers’ market they happened to see a sign for, and at every store they saw along the way. The trip took over five hours, and eventually Terry stopped texting Frankie to tell him when they’d be arriving and sent his location and let himself be tracked.

“Where are you from?” Evan asked this as they were in the final stretch of the drive, down a road that wasn’t on the usual route but one which Terry had run a quick scan through Google Maps and confirmed wouldn’t lead them into anything interesting.

“I grew up in Rochester.”

“Oh, you’re from New York?”

Terry laughed. “No way. Never been there. Rochester, Minnesota.”

Evan seemed genuinely surprised. “I had no idea there was another one.”

“Well you should know about it. It’s where the Mayo Clinic is, and it’s where I’m from. I went to college at a small liberal arts school in Iowa, did my master’s at Iowa State, came to the Cities to find a job. Worked a few places before I ended up with Davidson Incorporated.”

“So you never wanted to leave the Midwest?”

Terry shrugged. “It’s not so much that I was against leaving. Mostly I never left.
