Chapter Seven

After decorating the tree with Cat, Molly, and Iris, and leaving Sam and the others to work on the house, Elle decided to take a walk into town to look for something to buy for Molly for Christmas.

Being alone here on the streets of Leyton Grove should have felt familiar to her, even comforting, but she found herself missing Molly’s constant chatter, Sam’s easy humor, and Iris’s companionship. So many days she’d spent on that particular park bench, watching them, apart from everyone, with humanity rushing about her like a river. There was the crack in the sidewalk that half of Leyton Grove tripped over as they walked by. And the streetlamp that flickered at night, whenever she was close. There was the fat brown rabbit no one seemed to notice who made his home underneath a clump of bushes beneath the no-parking sign. That rabbit noticed her, though. She was absolutely sure of that.

She wound in and out of shops searching for just the right gift for Molly. And while she was hunting, she looked for something for Sam and Iris too, because she would only ever get this one chance to give a Christmas gift to them. She was standing in Grove Gifts, a sweet little boutique shop with a thousand little gifty things, staring at a snow globe with a fairy inside, when she saw Morgan Wynter smiling at her from across the shop. She smiled back and he made his way over to her.

“Hi, Elle. Nice to see you again.”

“You too. Shopping for Christmas?”

“I was looking for something for Sam. But I’m coming up empty. You?”

“I’m hoping something will strike me as perfect for Molly and Iris. And Sam.”

“Any luck with the job hunt?” he asked as they browsed along the aisle, picking up and putting down trinkets that neither of them were interested in.

“Not really.”

“You’re not really here for a job, are you?” he asked. There was a gentleness in his question that made her look at him. “Or even for very long.”

“No,” she admitted. “I’m here on vacation. How did you know?”

“I’m not really as lame as Sam thinks I am. I asked around about you.”

Elle blushed, imagining there wasn’t much that he could discover about her from anyone in town.

“It’s okay,” Morgan told her. “I won’t tell him I know he’s trying to pull the wool over my eyes. I know I push the line with him at times, but I just want him to be happy. And seeing him with you, well, that’s the first time in a long time he’s seemed happy.”

She wasn’t supposed to be the one to make him happy. She was supposed to find “the one” to make him happy. But opening his heart was part of her job, wasn’t it? As long as she didn’t end up hurting him. “He knows you want that. I think he just wants you to trust him enough to know when he’s ready.”

“You see there?” he said, with a charming grin.
