Outside the tent sat an older man with white hair and a beard. He looked radiant with light, and did not look ahead to them, but down on the platter before him. The wagon stopped by the tent’s entrance, and the man lifted his head to face the uninvited guests. Degani got off alone and approached. He stood above him, looking at the platter filled with goods, wanting to say that him and his friends are hungry and thirsty from the road, but couldn’t say a thing. The teacher merely stood there, wondering on the elder’s nature. Is he a man of peace, or perhaps he seeks to harm us? he thought to himself.

“Call your friends over; surely you will not leave them hungry and thirsty on such a hot day,” the man said in a calm and trusting voice. Degani looked at him in amazement, but his thirst overpowered him, seeing the jug of milk that was on the platter. Without further ado, he ran to call his friends.

The three comrades sat upon the mat in front of the elder and feasted hungrily, without assessing the food’s quality and the elder’s nature. After sating their hunger, and quenching their thirst, Degani wanted to ask the man who he was, and where was he from, but he couldn’t manage. The three were stricken by a sudden exhaustion, and their eyes shut against their will, until they fell into a deep slumber.
