Chapter 98
Lacey wandered farther and farther into the woods just to get away from the groans, the crying, the cursing, the bodies, the flies, the medical declarations of death. Prayer time was soon, but surely no one was going to abandon their critical tasks to gather to pray. But if they did, then it was too bad. She’d just have to miss evening prayer. Sister Kaypore liked her and would forgive her.
Lacey looked around and didn’t recognize anything. The trees were clumped tighter, and the high undergrowth rubbed against her trousers, which crawled with insects. She hoped she was lost—any excuse to not go back to the death scene.
A crackle sounded behind her. It was different than the flutter of birds she’d heard and the clicks and flaps of bats. There weren’t any wild animals in these woods except maybe the occasional fox, but nothing to worry about.
She stopped and turned. Yes, there were sounds. Someone was walking. Was she being followed? This was too far from the monastery, so the chance of any two people being here at the same time was remote.
“Sister Lacey?” a muffled male voice cut through the trees.
Whoever he was, he knew her name and was likely less of a threat. Her breaths quickened, and she steadied herself against a tree as she scanned the ground for an emergency weapon, just in case.
“Sister Lacey! It’s Adrienne. I’m the bee guy from the other day. Do you remember me?”
She laughed in relief. “Yes, of course. Can you find me? Just follow my voice.”
“Keep talking, Sister,” he called out. “You move very quickly, so I lost you.”
“Serves you right for following a sister into the woods.”
Adrienne emerged from behind a tree and stopped. His sweat-drenched shirt clung to his body, revealing a muscular build.
“You’re like an angel with the way the sun splashes on your face.” His gaze settled on her.
“The evening sun makes everything golden.” She swallowed. He was too complimentary.
The Order only accepted men and women who were of exceptional character, intelligence, spirituality, and physical appearance. It wasn’t clear to her why she was accepted. She was not of good character as her mother reminded her constantly. Her spirituality was weak, a fact she’d come to realize shortly after arriving at the monastery. Most people regarded her as attractive, but that was a curse. Her mother had berated her for wanting to flaunt a gift. Physical beauty was a gift that lasted for only a short time. It certainly wouldn’t take much to lose all that made her pleasing to the eye, which was why it was a mystery to her that men only seemed to judge her by appearance.
“It’s good to see you, Sister Lacey.”
“Call me Tori,” Lacey said, feeling naughty. They were far enough away from the monastery. No one could see or hear her. Not even Lord Ryna, who’d no doubt be busy with all the souls she’d reaped. Quite a haul. It must be nice being a god. She wondered if
