SAMANTHA

Ever since our first date, Logan and I have taken to the daily habit of meeting up for an afternoon walk through the park. It’s not dinner and a movie, like I’d prefer, but I’ll take these micro dates over nothing. Most of our conversations revolve around Isabel.

“The best part about being a dad,” Logan says as we’re walking through the park one day, “is getting to watch her grow from being this tiny little thing that I could practically fit into the palm of my hand to becoming her own independent person. She’s going through this new phase right now where she insists on doing everything by herself, like getting dressed in the morning, even though she always puts her clothes on backward and her shoes on the wrong feet,” he laughs.

Even though I’m still warming up to the idea of Logan being a single dad, I find it endearing the way he lights up when he talks about his daughter.

“And in the morning, she insists on making herself cereal for breakfast, even though she usually spills the milk everywhere.”

“That’s cute,” I say.

“It is,” agrees Logan. “But we hit a really big milestone this summer.”

“Oh, yeah? What’s that?”

“This was the first summer she learned how to ride her bike without training wheels. She insists she’s a big girl now because of it.”

“I bet she’s excited to start Kindergarten.”

“You have no idea. She can’t wait to learn how to read.”

“She seems like an amazing kid.”

“She is,” agrees Logan. “That’s the only hard part about being divorced, not getting to see Isabel every day.”

“How has she been handling the divorce? Isabel, I mean?”

“Surprisingly well. But she was only three when Kaitlyn and I separated, so I don’t think she has many memories of us together anyway.”

So, the ex has a name: Kaitlyn. I make a mental note of this. “How do you think Kaitlyn would feel if you brought another woman around Isabel?”

“I don’t think she’d be thrilled,” says Logan, without hesitation. “I mean, I don’t think anybody would be thrilled in that situation. But she can’t expect me to stay single forever. To be fair, I don’t expect her to stay single forever either.”

“You don’t think it would bother you if your ex brought another guy around Isabel?”

Logan purses his lips and shoves his hands in his pockets. “The only thing I care about is Isabel’s well-being. The rest is none of my business. That’s why I think if Kaitlyn ever met you, she should have nothing to worry about.”

Just the idea of meeting Isabel and Logan’s ex stops me in my tracks. “What do you mean?”

Logan looks at me and smiles. “You’re sweet. You’re kind. And I can tell you’ll make a great mom someday.”

My heart catches in my throat. I was hoping this topic wouldn’t come up this soon, but why delay the inevitable? He needs to know. “What if I told you that I don’t ever want kids?”

For a moment, Logan doesn’t say anything. “Why do you think you don’t ever want kids?”

“I don’t know.
