Farah found her enforced idleness impossible to cope with and became increasingly fractious as a consequence. She particularly resented the fact that Isaac hadn’t reported in. Convincing herself that he was holding stuff back from her, she eventually gave up all restraint and called him.

‘Hey,’ he said. ‘Is everything okay?’

‘Why wouldn’t it be?’ Her voice sounded sullen, even to her own ears, but she couldn’t seem to help herself. She knew he had been out on the town the previous night – his picture was all over the online newspapers – and she felt peeved that he could even contemplate enjoying himself whilst she was stuck at home, worried and unsettled. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had a night out that didn’t involve a quick glass of wine at the local but it hadn’t seemed important to be missing out on the glamorous life before now.

‘It’s kinda early to be calling, especially on a Sunday.’

‘Not for me,’ she replied, glancing at the clock and wondering if she’d woken him. Wondering too if he’d woken alone. Probably not. ‘It’s gone eight in the morning. I’ve usually been up for over two hours by now, regardless of what day of the week it is. Just because you didn’t get in until sparrow fart…’

‘What a charming turn of phrase.’ His chuckle resonated down the line, deep and earthy, chasing away a little of her resentment – if that’s what she had been feeling. ‘Anyway, I was about to call you.’

‘Right.’

‘Are you always this disbelieving?’

‘Did I say I didn’t believe you?’ Farah vaguely wondered when she had been reduced to the level of playground behaviour.

‘Can you get someone to take care of Daisy today?’ he asked, not deigning to fall to her level of immaturity. His question took Farah unawares but had the effect of further lifting her depressed mood. If Daisy needed day care then presumably Isaac had need of her company.

‘Yes, I guess. Why? What do you have in mind?’

‘I’ve found out a few things. Tell you what, get yourself ready, make the arrangements for Daisy and I’ll collect you in a couple of hours.’

‘Okay… I think. Want to tell me what this is all about?’

‘Not on the phone.’

‘Very cloak and dagger.’

Farah felt the remnants of her antagonism giving way to amusement. Isaac, this tough individual who took no prisoners in his professional life, appeared to want her help and she would not repay him by being surly. This was as much about her own survival as it was about his and they needed to work as a team.

Keep telling yourself that.

Besides, she never seemed to feel bored when he was around. He kept her on her toes and made her feel safe in the middle of a situation that she knew to be a minefield of corruption and deception.

‘There’s stuff going on and we haven’t scratched the surface yet so we need to get up to speed and start fighting back. It sounds melodramatic but I do not exaggerate. Believe me on this.
