Eva stared blankly at the wall in front of her, lost in thought. She had just called Madison, and just like the countless times before, her call went unanswered. The silence was getting to her; she wondered what had transpired in those few minutes she had been in the bathroom that made Madison literally run out the door of her house. They hadn’t talked since then, with Madison seemingly avoiding any chance of bumping into her by scheduling her meetings at times that Eva was always busy. She couldn’t shake the idea that she had been ghosted, but was it possible to ghost someone you work with?

She was exhausted, and it was looking like just the right time to leave work, go home and unwind with a nice meal, and maybe even watch a movie. It had been a long time since she watched one of those; she could definitely enjoy some Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman right now. She had already started stacking most of the files on her desk when suddenly, the intercom went off. “Eva, I have Nathan here for you,” Michael’s voice came through the intercom.

She leaned back in her chair, mildly annoyed by the request until she remembered she had asked him to check in with her. “Any chance he can he come back tomorrow?” she asked.

“He insists you’ll want to hear what he has to say,” Michael replied.

Eva sighed. Clearly, she would have to deal with whatever this was. “Fine. Send him in.”

Nathan slowly opened the door to her office and walked in. “Good evening, Miss Perez.”

“Nice to see you, Nate. What’s going on that’s so urgent it couldn’t wait until tomorrow?”

Walking across the width of her office, he took a seat. “It’s your brother.”

She inwardly groaned; this isn’t what she needed right now. “What is going on with Mateo?”

Nate shrugged and said, “Well, he was as expected initially, not going the extra mile, but not being a liability, and honestly, you made it seem like that was all we could hope for, but for the last two weeks or so, he seems to have a fire burning in him. He keeps asking me for more and more responsibility. And he’s delivering. It’s been a pleasant surprise. I thought you’d want to know.”

Eva struggled to hide her surprise. This was an unexpected update and truly more than she ever anticipated for Mateo in the company. “Well, thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’m pleased my brother is doing so well under your leadership.”

“I’m just doing my job,” Nathan said, clearly embarrassed with the praise.

“If there isn’t anything else…” Eva prompted. This was better news than the rest of her day dictated, but she didn’t really have the energy to consider another conversation.

“No. Nothing,” he said, quickly standing.

“Okay. Have a good evening then,” she said, gesturing towards the door. Nathan said goodnight and made his way to the door. Eva stared at him as he walked; he would have done great as a military man with his brisk walk and usual sharp attention to what was happening around him.
