LIAM

In my office, the glow of the screen casted a soft light across the dark mahogany desk. I adjusted my tie, a nervous habit, as I waited for the Zoom call to connect. My parents, always punctual, would be on the other end, and I braced myself for their reaction to the news about Emma and me.

The familiar chime signaled the start of the call, and my parents' faces appeared on the screen. My father, always the picture of composure, sat with his usual upright posture, while my mother’s warm smile did little to ease the knot of apprehension in my stomach.

“Liam, dear, you look tense. Is everything alright?” my mother asked, her keen eyes peering through the digital divide.

I cleared my throat, mustering a smile. “I’m fine, Mom. Just a lot on my plate lately.”

My father, ever the astute businessman, leaned in slightly. “You didn’t schedule a family call just to discuss business, did you, son?”

There was no beating around the bush with him. I took a deep breath. “Actually, I have some personal news. I’ve met someone.”

The surprise was evident on their faces. My mother’s eyes widened, a mix of excitement and curiosity. “Oh, Liam! That’s wonderful news! Who is she?”

I hesitated, feeling the weight of the moment. “Her name is Emma Reynolds. She’s... she’s special.”

My father’s expression was one of interest, but I could sense his underlying skepticism. “Emma Reynolds,” he mused. “And how serious is this relationship, Liam?”

I had rehearsed this part, but the words felt heavy as I spoke them. “It’s quite serious. We’re... seeing a lot of each other.”

My mother clasped her hands together, her excitement barely contained. “This is unexpected but delightful news! We must meet her, Liam. You must bring her to dinner.”

The suggestion caught me off guard. “Of course, I’ll arrange something soon.”

My father’s gaze was piercing, analytical. “Liam, you know the importance of stability and family. Is this relationship heading in a... more permanent direction?”

The unspoken pressure of their expectations hung in the air. I knew what they were asking without them having to say it outright. “I believe it could be, yes.”

My mother beamed. “Oh, to think, our Liam finally settling down!”

As the conversation with my parents shifted, I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions about Emma.

"So, Liam, tell us about this Emma," my father began, his tone a mix of curiosity and caution. "What does she do?"

I took a deep breath, maintaining my composure. "She's an event planner, quite talented. She's new in town but has been making quite a name for herself in Maple Falls."

My mother's face lit up. "An event planner? That sounds delightful. How did you two meet?"

The question was innocent enough, but I could sense the undercurrent of expectation in her voice. "We met at a local event," I replied, choosing my words carefully. "It was... unexpected but pleasant. We hit it off right away. It’s been a few months, but I wanted to make sure that this was something serious before telling you both.
