Chapter 12

Jack

The clock read three a.m. I was laying in my underwear. I heard the running water from the bathroom turn off.

Emily opened the door and walked back in. I smiled to myself as she lay down on the bed beside me, laying her head on my chest.

I kissed her on the top of the head, smelling her head.

“Feel free to kick me out at any time.”

“No, stay. I just have a class in the morning.”

“I have practice.”

We lay in silence for a while, her fingers tracing patterns on my chest. Mine twirling a small lock in her hair.

“So when’s the game?” she asked

“Friday night.”

“It’s a big one?”

I shrugged. “Yeah, it's my first championship game as a Blue Devil.”

“Are you nervous?”

I hesitated before answering.

“I wouldn’t say I’m nervous. But I kind of hate the leadup to a game.”

I rubbed her shoulders.

“When I’m in the game, I feel like I’m in complete control. But the days leading up to it, it's like being in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.”

“That makes sense,” she said, looking down past our feet. I looked down at her, smiling. Her eyes were curious and serious.

I chuckled.

“Listen, don't tell anyone about that. The guys rely on me for confidence. We all rely on each other, but especially me. I need to be strong for them.”

“What do you do to take your mind off it, if you don’t talk to your friends?”

“Mm, I spend as much time as I can on the ice. It helps get me ready for games, but it also quiets my mind.”

She was tracing my chest with her finger, “You sound like me.”

“What do you do to relax?”

“Study more,” she said laughing.

I laughed with her, “You do have to find a balance. If you’re always going full speed, you’re likely to crash.”

“Oh, that’s rich. Coming from you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.

“You were the one I saw zooming around full speed on that golf cart.”

“Well look what happened.”

She laughed, looked up, and kissed me, “So, it wasn’t so bad to crash, was it?”

Her cheeks were glowing in the amber light of her room. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun. I kissed her on the top of the head, breathing in the scent of apricot.

“Do you not have a roommate?” I asked, I didn’t see any signs of anyone else living in the room.

“I did. But she dropped out two weeks into classes.”

“You probably intimidated her,” I said.

“Shut up. I’m very nice,” she said patting me on the chest.

I looked around the room and noticed a pair of skates hanging from the wall. I pointed at them,

“So those are yours, then?”

She blushed, “Yeah, I used to skate as a kid, but I haven’t touched them since coming here,” she looked up at me with bright, wide eyes, “You guys always seem to be using the ice rink on campus.”

I laughed. “Come on,” I said sitting up in the bed.

“What’re you doing.”

“I want to show you something.”

“It’s the middle of the night.
