CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Answers

I slipped in through the cat door and walked through the living room to Agent Val Hayes. She was lying on the couch and held an ice pack to her head.

“I, I can’t really open my eyes,” she said. Whitney had cleaned the wound well. Val winced as she held the ice to her temple.

“It’s okay, honey, you just keep your eyes closed for a bit,” said Whitney, nodding her head toward the light above. Shaw took the hint, turning off the lights in the living room until only the fire illuminated the room. Catherine turned the lights off in the kitchen.

“What’s your name, hun?” asked Whitney, sitting on the floor beside her. Shaw stood above her, and I jumped up onto the back of the couch.

“Val Hayes, Special Agent. Federal Bureau of Investigation .” She kept her eyes closed and moved her legs to a more comfortable position.

“What year is it, Val?”

“Ah, 19… 20…2024.”

“That’s right.”

“Can I have some water?” Shaw had already prepared a glass of fresh water and handed it to her as she sat up.

“Take it slow,” Whitney told her, helping her into a more or less upright position. She reached out for the glass.

“What’s the last thing you remember, Miss Hayes?”

She sipped the water and gave it back to Shaw, then rested her head on the cushion. “I remember taking off my seatbelt. Reaching for my weapon.” Whitney made eye contact with Shaw.

“And then?”

She thought for a moment. “I don’t think I remember.” She put her hand to her side. “Wait, where’s my handgun?” She patted her side again.

Shaw knelt down by her head. “It’s probably still in your car.” Shaw tilted his head up to Catherine. She nodded and went to check if it was in her jacket. “Miss Hayes, I’m Detective William Shaw, Copper Summit PD. This is Nurse Whitney Porter. You’re in my house, the roads are impassable for the time being. I was involved in a vehicular accident with you a few hours ago. Do you remember who you were chasing?”

Val held her head and tried to think.

“It was snowing,” said Shaw. “The roads were very slick, and I believe we were both in pursuit of the same person. Dark SUV, shots were fired…”

Her eyes suddenly opened. “Yes! The Baer house! I was there…”

“Will, go easy,” said Whitney.

“No, no, no, I’m fine,” Val said as she sat up straighter. “But I’d love some coffee.” Catherine immediately went to retrieve it. “Black, please.”

As Whitney checked her eyes with a tiny flashlight, Val complied but kept talking. “It’s the dealership. Dale Sharpe Cadillac. He’s been on our radar for years, but the Bureau finally decided to put me on the inside. I actually sell cars there. Was Employee Of The Month for November.” She laughed but immediately stopped when it turned into pain.

So, Val did have her own office at the dealership. That’s where I saw her last. I tried to remember her expression when she saw Shaw’s cruiser out front, but the snow was coming down too hard.
