CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Theodore

I see Lydia’s shoes from under the sofa, and her voice booms in the apartment. Since it is her, I sit back on the sofa. Lydia stops dead in her tracks when she sees me.

‘Look at him. He’s so cute. Is it me, or has he gotten bigger?’

‘Yep,’ Jane says, opening the fridge. ‘He’s a big boy.’

I sometimes wonder if this is Jane’s way of saying I am chubby. Lydia smiles, and Jane pours two glasses of water. Lydia moves to the window and looks out.

‘What is that mess by the flower bed?’ Lydia asks.

‘That is Theodore’s handy work,’ Jane says.

Lydia turns to her, wide-eyed. ‘Why would he dig someone’s flower bed?’

‘The flower bed belongs to our friend. He had something hidden there, and last night, he poisoned a dog.’

‘Come again?’ Lydia says.

‘He killed the neighbour’s dog because the dog was snooping in those flower beds. Last night, he poisoned the dog.’

‘And you saw him poison the dog?’

‘No,’ says Jane sadly.

‘So anyone could have poisoned the dog,’ says Lydia.

‘It was him. Nobody here would go around poisoning dogs. He has something buried in there, and now he’s removed it.’

Lydia is looking out the window. The dentist’s blinds are open, and his things are laid out.

‘Looks like he’s taking a trip, don’t you agree?’ says Jane. ‘You need to look into this guy. He’s suspicious as sin, the wife, the packing of her things but the jewellery left behind, and now dogs are being killed, and he is going away, and we’re never going to find out if he did something to his wife.’

Lydia sighs, saying nothing.

‘Suppose the woman he was seen with wasn’t his wife,’ Jane says.

‘Then who would it be if not his wife?’ Lydia asks.

‘His mistress.’

‘Did you see him with a woman in that apartment apart from his wife?’

Jane lowers her head. ‘No.’

Lydia looks out the window for more time. ‘Dr Roy Abdilla is no more a murderer than I am.’

Jane stares at her. ‘So you’re telling me you can explain the suspicious shit going on there?’

‘No, neither can you. That is a secret private world that is going on in there. People do many things in private that they can’t possibly explain in public.’

‘Like getting rid of their wives,’ I say.

‘Get that idea out of your head, Jane.’

‘What about the axe, the rope, the ring?’ Jane asks.

Lydia moves to the kitchen and takes a large knife from its block. ‘Everyone has axes and knives.’

‘But I don’t wrap them in newspapers. I bet he buried them in those flower beds, which cost a dog its life. So Theodore went to dig the flower beds.’

Lydia raised an eyebrow. ‘And he found the knives?’

‘No, it was empty because he had removed them.’

‘I see, very inconvenient,’ says Lydia. ‘So, I suppose the cat saw him do it then.’

Both look at me.

‘Why don’t you ask him?’ Jane asks.

Lydia puffs her cheek. ‘Mr Abdilla took his wife to catch the ferry to Gozo.’

‘But why would she take everything she owns?’ Jane asks.

Lydia takes a sip of water and places the glass down as her phone goes off.
