CHAPTER 19
CARY
Thatch mumbled something I couldnât quite hear. I was halfway down the steps, and it surprised me how fast I was moving. Instead of my usual clutching the railing and praying I didnât tumble to the bottom, I was descending the stairs like an almost normal person.
âI couldnât hear you.â I said when I reached the bottom, slightly out of breath.
âIt was, um, interesting.â Thatch grinned. âWhat are you still doing up?â
Sleep and I were hardly friends, and knowing Cary was out with Joey made it even more difficult to drift off, but there was no way in hell I was telling Thatch about it.
âI don't sleep much. Itâs rare for me to get over four or five hours a night.â I replied.
âMe too.â Thatch said with his huge, toothy grin. Come to think of it, I had a similar smile splitting my face. âAre you hungry?â
âAlways, especially when itâs something youâve made. You are one of the best cooks Iâve ever met.â I patted Thatch on the shoulder, and I noticed Thatchâs posture relaxing, and a slight flush inched up his neck.
âNo, Iâm not. You are falling in love with southern food, and I happen to be decent at making it. Letâs see whatâs in the fridge.â Thatch reached out his hand, hesitated, then spun around and strolled into the kitchen.
I followed behind him, and it struck me that we had a strange awkwardness between us that Iâd never felt with anyone else before. It was like there was something unsaid that needed to be spoken. I knew what I wanted to say, but was unsure of Thatch's reaction.
âSit.â Thatch said, and I sat in my usual place by the counter. âWhat time is it?â
I pulled my phone out of my pocket. âAlmost midnight. You must have had fun if you stayed out this late.â I was fishing for information about his date, but didnât want to seem too obvious about it. Then my phone pinged. I glanced at the screen and saw a message from Sam.
Iâm almost at Dadâs house
âYour fabulous son just texted me. He says heâll be here any minute.â I slid the phone back into the pocket of my robe.
âWhy on earth is Sam coming here so late?â Thatch said, and started taking food out of the fridge. âMight as well make a full meal. Iâm starving, and Sam is always hungry. Did you invite him?â
âNo. I havenât spoken to him in days.â I replied, wondering why he was coming here too.
âAre you handy with a knife?â Thatch asked, and when I nodded yes, he pulled a bowl of round green things out of the fridge and set them in front of me. Next to the bowl, he placed a well-used wooden cutting board, then pulled a knife out of the block and handed it to me.
âWhat are these things?â I pointed at the bowl. âThey look like tomatoes, but theyâre green.â
âThatâs because Iâm making fried green tomatoes. Hope you donât mind a little stink, but Iâve got some fish that needs to be eaten, so Iâll fry that up as well.
