GERTRUDE'S TRIP TO BATESVILLE

Once them boys got back on track that night there waren't but two things for Little to do. First he had to convince Fertilizer and then he had to worry about what Gertrude and Crosby was up to.

Fertilizer waren't no problem at all. Little found him and Etta Mae dancing up on Porky's Rooftop. Once he got ’em set down at a table, he commenced his convincin.

“Now I know you two love birds is wantin to get outta these parts,” he said, “but I also know you ain't got the money to leave. Fertilizer, you knows what we got planned. You come back in with us and y'all will have the money to leave on. You can get outta here and never show up here again.”

“I don't know, Little. I ain't at all interested in spendin no more time in jail,” Fertilizer replied.

“Foolproof, Fert, foolproof. You knows the plan. Hell, it cain't miss.”

“Fertilizer, honey, I ain't one to advise nobody to break the law, and I don't know what y'all got planned. But if you ain't likely to get caught and you ain't gonna hurt nobody, then I says do it and let's us get the hell outta here!” said Etta Mae.

Boy, old Fertilizer was took back by that, and before he knowed it he was back in the deal with both feet.

That took care of, Little didn't have nothin to do but feel sorry for hisself about Gertrude.

In the meantime, Gertrude had been fendin off Crosby all the way to Batesville. They waren't even to Oil Trough ’fore Crosby had scooted over by her and tried to run his hand up under her dress. Gertrude didn't take kindly to that kind of behavior and she told him so.

“Crosby,” she said, “I know I ain't much, but I'm a damn sight too good for the likes of you. You keep them wanderin hands to yourself now. I mean it.”

That didn't deter Crosby none and by the time they come up on Batesville poor old Gertrude looked a sight. She was loyal to Lawyer Coffey, though, so she done as he instructed and drove all over Batesville lookin for Crosby's cousin.

After burnin up near about a tank of gas drivin around lookin for the cousin, Gertrude begin to smell a rat. Finally, she stopped at a all night café about eleven-thirty and asked Crosby to go in and get ’em a sody. While he was inside, she taken off for home.

She'd got to the outskirts of Batesville when she seen she didn't have much gas left. There bein no fillin stations open at that time of night, Gertrude decided to take a short cut back to Newport through Newark and cross the river on the Jacksonport ferry. Then she'd only be three miles from home.

Well, she oughta have knowed the ferry shut down at midnight and didn't fire back up ’til six in the morning. Sure

'nuff she got there right after it shut down, and her car bein on empty, she had to set in the car beside of the road all night.
