Chapter Twenty

On the day following Franky's escape from the Hydes' household at dead of night, Lorna Craine paused to admire some hand-knitted cardigans in the small window of a craft shop in Hockley Vale, on the North Yorks moors. She was on two weeks' holiday from work and was touring the country in her car, stopping for odd nights here and there in bed and breakfasts whenever the fancy took her. It was some years since she'd been there with Mary Ingles on the day they'd placed Natasha with the Salisburys. She had fallen in love with the place back then, which was one of the reasons she'd chosen to visit it again. She wondered briefly how Natasha was doing. Mary had relinquished the case following Natasha's adoption, and Lorna hoped that the child would have found a happy ending with her new mum and dad. The young woman was tempted to knock on their cottage door. It was only a stone's throw from here if she remembered rightly . . . but then she decided against it. It wouldn't have been a very professional thing to do and the Salisburys probably wouldn't want reminders of the past.

Mary had retired now, due to heart problems, and Lorna had taken over her casebook. Sadly, one of the first things on her agenda when she got back to work was to visit Alex, or Francis as he was now known. She'd heard the week before that his adoption placement had ended following the death of both his parents, and seeing as he was originally from the Nuneaton area she had agreed to take the case back on and look for somewhere else for him to live. Meanwhile he was in temporary foster-care with a family in Barnstaple. She had received a call from a social worker called Mrs Smythe informing her of the child's circumstances and her heart had gone out to him, especially when she learned how his new parents had died. Apparently, his dad had slipped over a cliff and his mother had committed suicide the very same night. She shuddered to think of how it must have affected the poor child, to lose them both like that. And then he'd gone on the run, but she supposed that he'd been so distraught that he wouldn't have known what he was doing. Poor little mite, she'd make him a priority just as soon as she got back to work.

Her thoughts turned to Lauren, his sister, now happily living at Feathermill Lodge in Nuneaton. Now there was a success story, if ever she'd heard one. She'd been shopping in her lunch-hour in Nuneaton town centre only a couple of weeks before when Penny Daventry, with Lauren swinging from her hand, had come strolling through the marketplace and almost collided with her.

'Why it's Lorna, isn't it?' Penny had asked, after apologising for nearly bumping into her.

'Yes, it is. How are you?' Lorna had had no need to ask how Lauren was. She looked positively glowing and the picture of health.
