The leg is heavy; lift it in easy stages. Keep one hand on the Hara and reach around under the knee with the other. Lean forward to lift and bend the knee. With your partner’s foot still on the ground, rest the leg against your side. Bring your hand out to push up on the front of the knee (see below) and rotate the leg in a controlled way, using your body weight. Rotate the hip inward and forward, around, out, and back a few times.

The Spleen Channel
Work on the Spleen Channel can help with all problems of the joints in the leg, hip, knee, ankle, and big toe. It is especially useful when pain is felt on the path of the Spleen Channel and if it feels worse in damp weather. Both dampness and the Spleen are associated with the Earth element (see p. 25 and Chapter 9 ). The Spleen also helps with the transformation and movement of fluids within the body. Feelings of heaviness or bloating in the abdomen and legs, or fluid around the ankles (oedema), for example, can also be treated by working on this Channel. The Spleen controls Blood, helping to produce it, and keeping it within the vessels. In women, menstrual problems such as scanty or missing periods, or bleeding in between periods, may respond to work on the Spleen Channel. More generally, frequent nose-bleeds, bleeding piles, easy bruising, and mild varicose veins are conditions related to the Spleen. Finally, some troubles of the lower digestive tract, especially diarrhoea, can benefit from work on this Channel.
Caution: Do not give Shiatsu on the Spleen Channel during pregnancy if miscarriage is likely. Do not use Sp 6 during any pregnancy.
After the rotations place your partner’s leg down, tucked against your body. Lift the ankle and slide the toes to the ankle of the other leg (see left). Let your partner’s knee fall gently outward. This brings the Spleen Channel uppermost.
