ANOTHER VERSION OF EVENTS, FROM AN AUTHORIZED SOURCE:

When Earth understood that He had put Adam to sleep to make him a fertile companion who would bear him fertile daughters, she shook with fury. She asked Him:

“Why are you doing this? What am I going to do with so many people living off of me!”

“What I want is for living creatures, the ones that live in the sea, the land and the air, to witness the enormous difference between my Being and that of the people, and for that I need many of them.”

“But think about me. I don’t have the strength to produce enough food for a pack of Adamites.”

He answered:

“Don’t worry, between the two of us we’ll find a way to feed the hordes.”

They made an agreement: for Him, night; for Earth, day. He would help Earth to produce enough by making the skies rain to keep Earth damp, and during the night He would make the people sleep so they could digest their food and recover their strength; growing strong in the dark, humanity would populate all parts of the Earth, growing rice in swampy regions, beans and gourds in the earth, oysters and fish in the seas; they would harvest, reap, fish, and hunt on land and at sea.

After reaching their agreement, both He and the Earth defined the unforgivable exceptions to the natural order of things: any wretch who betrayed Him or his own self would be unable to sleep; any group that cursed, slandered, or plundered the Earth senselessly would be subjected to lethal heatwaves and freezes.
