Seth raised his head slowly and half released the soul of the sleeping child. There was no question about what was in the room with him. He bared his teeth and hissed and drew up the full bulk of his form before it. The creature had dropped down from the sky beside him like a bird of prey. Its fiery eyes were already burning him. He saw the white fire of the arrow that it had pointed at his chest. But he had other tricks up his sleeve, he would not be standing still and letting the lightning of the sky explode his heart.

“Move away from that child,” the creature said.

And then Seth forced himself to look into its eyes. Something was strange. He sniffed the air. The smell, as well as the particular way this light hurt his eyes, reminded him of something. Dimly he remembered that he had often quite enjoyed the way this felt, at least when he saw it reflected on him through the dimming medium of human eyes. Seth did as he was told and moved away from his victim.
