Amyeen ran towards the castle wall, from all around her came the screams of citizens as the remaining Dark Stalkers unleashed their furious bloodlust upon them. She had to get to the palace, some unseen force was drawing her toward her sister, even though her instincts were screaming at her to turn around to the streets and hunt down as many of the creatures as she could. She rounded a corner at a run and slipped on the wet cobblestones of the market square that fronted the castle wall and gate, the palace keep was within that wall. She could see Imperial Guardsmen manning the wall.

Although she could see them, she was confident that they could not see her, her chainmail was oil blued and dull, virtually black in colour, and the remainder of her clothing had been designed to not reflect light. Because of the light of Kino’le there were no wall sconces for street lighting and the only light came from the battlement’s torches and windows with the drapes not drawn. All that could give her away was movement, and although she knew they would not leave their post to investigate her they might be reporting to Lorgane, for that reason alone she had to avoid them. But she was not worried, she knew the castle and the palace within like the back of her hand, she knew all the secret entrances for she had used them on her outings with Danyard many times, she even had a key on her for the one she would use tonight. There was a secret entrance that Danyard had had built into the barracks on the east side, and also knowing that every able-bodied man would be mobilised she knew the barracks would be empty, she turned west and stealthily headed for the barracks.

Kino’le city was built high on a cliff face so its outer wall did not actually encircle it, it just ran around the front. The barren cliff face was five hundred paces high and had never yet been scaled, the cliff face itself rarely catching sunlight so moss and lichen grew in abundance and ensured the rocks were always wet and slippery. The palace looked out over its northern side with a view of that wild sea and the castle spreading out around on its east, west and southern side. Danyard had loved this from the first moment he had set eyes upon it, knowing that they could never be attacked from the sea directly, all trade going through the port of Kardon, which all the previous Kings had built up from a little fishing hamlet during their reigns, all having the same thoughts of protection from sea invasion. Keeping the seat of power away from the ease of approach that was offered by the sea.
