“This is so surreal,” I said as I lay on the bed stroking my bare tummy. “I can’t believe I’m a Dragon Mother.”

Danic, who lay stretched across the end of the huge bed, grabbed my foot. “The Dragon Mother.”

“Better get used to it,” Hale said as he stood and stretched.

I’d never get enough of looking at their bodies. All so different, all so delicious.

“I never told you guys this before but ever since we, erm, got together, I’ve dreamed about giving you children. Myself too. I wanted our family to be complete, but everyone said it was impossible, so I never said anything. Then for a brief moment, I thought I might be the exception to the rule. That’s when Vazha shattered that dream by sucking out all the juice from the Dragon’s Heart.”

Ryen, who’d moved back to the Eames, looked up from the book Soso had given me. “So why are you still holding onto it?”

“Hard to explain, but mostly it boils down to something simple. Max told me to, and until I hear from him otherwise, I’m going to follow his orders. He’s not only our casique but he’s smarter than all of us combined.”

“Makes sense,” Kellum said from right next to me, his fingers lazily drawing circles on my shoulder.

“You know,” Ryen said, looking down at the page, “this may be a kid’s book, but it’s got some interesting information in it.”

“Like what?” Ash asked, propping himself up on an elbow on the other side of me.

“Says here Dragon Mothers are extraordinarily powerful.” After Danic’s snort, he added, “Okay, we already knew that much, but look.”

He held up the book and pointed to an illustration of a furious Anastasia holding a massive sword over a red glowing object.

“What’s that?” Hale asked, squinting.

“That’s the Dragon Mother absolutely wrecking the hell out of a malum.”

“It’s just a story,” I reminded him.

“I dunno,” Danic said, climbing off the bed to grab the book. “Yesterday, we all thought Dragon Mothers were a myth.”

He had a point. “So what are you saying?”

Ryen answered. “I’m saying, Party Favor, that maybe this is more of a guidebook than a fairy tale.”

I looked to Kellum for his level-headed opinion. He shrugged. “Worth a shot. Legend holds that no dragon alive can destroy it. Doesn’t mention anything about a Dragon Mother.”

“Are you serious? Dragons can’t kill it but you think I can? You’re all nuts!”

“Think about it,” Ash said as he pulled on his tunic, much to my chagrin. “If Vazha created the Heart to stop you from being born, it makes some sort of sense you’d be the only one who could destroy it. Beautiful symmetry.”

It took me a minute to accept that they weren’t fucking with me. Finally, I conceded. “I guess I can give it a shot. Just don’t get your hopes up.”

Ryen jumped up from his seat and Danic whooped loudly. Getting dressed seemed like the next logical step, and soon we were out in the main part of the cave, the Heart’s protective pouch in my hands.
