Outside, the lightning bugs were floating in the tall grass. Tink chased one, only to miss it when it went dark and blended into the shadows. She got the second one and held it in her cupped hands, feeling its little bug feet and its little bug body bashing itself against her palms.
Fast as she could, she let it go.
Sorry, bug, she thought, and ran through the grass to the garden, where she could hear her mom grunting and swearing.
There were giant piles of weeds and dirt on the inside and outside of the fence. The big sunflower had fallen over like it was tired. There were two clear rows now, but the plants didnât look like they liked anything that had happened today.
Tink walked around the edge of the fence until she was standing at the entrance, which kinda looked like a cave. She ducked under a bush that seemed like it was growing sideways and stepped into the garden. The air smelled like the color green and dirt.
She swallowed down the Mom she wanted to call out that would make all this easier and just followed the sound of rustling. And swearing.
When she found her mom, she was crouched, her knees in the dirt, but she was so focused on whatever she was doing, she didnât hear Tink walk up to her. She was a mess, a total mess. There were smears of dirt and what looked like blood on her shirt. She had weeds sticking out of her hair and was panting like sheâd just gone running. Mom used to go running in the mornings. That seemed like a million years ago.
As Tink watched, her mom put a hand on the ground. And then another. And then she just fell down on her side, right in the middle of the plants, her body curled up like she was going to sleep.
âMom?â she croaked, and ran over to her.
âMom?â she said a little louder, alarmed by the fact that Tink talking to her had gotten no reaction.
âMom!â she yelled as loud as she could.
There was more rustling and suddenly Abel was there, ducking through the garden to find them.
âHey,â he said with a quick smile for her. âWhat happened?â
âI donât know. She just lay down!â
âGo get Peg, would you?â
