CHAPTER THIRTY: Ben

“Can I hang here today?” Jax breezed through the front door of The Bird Catcher and threw her canvas messenger bag on the bench by the door. “I’m lonely back at your place,” she said. Penny perked up from her doggy bed and looked to me to see if it was ok to get a rub from her bestie.

“Go ahead,” I said, pointing to Jax. She leapt from her bed and ran to her kneeling buddy. “How long you plan on staying?” I asked, setting the wood planer next to the coffee table I was working on.

“Why? Tired of me already? Jesus, Benji, I just got here!”

“Calm down, Miss Thing. I love the company. I’m just surprised is all. I thought you hated this part of Washington. ‘Too quiet for a gal about town.’ Isn’t that what you said?”

“Fuck off! I have unfinished business. I’ll work a bit now and then I’m taking some vacation time.” She plugged her laptop into the wall and sat on the floor, Penny’s head already in her lap. “I can’t expect you to make this shit right,” she declared, giving me the evil eye.

“Does this have anything to do with you being gone for a couple of hours yesterday morning?” I moved Penny’s bed near her in case she actually planned on working. “I didn’t see Logan’s truck at the work site yesterday,” I added.

“He called in sick. Too upset and crushed by his actions,” she said. “He’s here today though.”

“You keeping his schedule for him now?” I sat down and pulled my knees to my chest, staring at her. “What’d he say?” I asked, too damn curious to let it go.

“Oh, I see how this works. You want me to spill the tea now, but you wouldn’t give me any juice the other night when Logan blew outta your place.”

“That’s different. What happened was personal and I didn’t want to paint him in a bad light,” I said a bit too defensively.

“Too late for that, Benji. He already feels like a schmuck and blames himself, so you’re off the hook with me.” She flipped her laptop open. “What did you do to scare him off anyway?”

“Nothing! He said he wanted to kiss me, so I let him. It was hot as shit, and I may have ratcheted things up a notch too quickly and he just freaked out.” I said. “It seemed like he was into me and then one second later he told me to stop and ran. I’m not sure what happened. I don’t have the time to deal with his issues in the first place so I’m over it. I have zero fucking interest in figuring him out.”

“Yeah whatever, liar!”

“I’m serious, Jax. Yeah, sure, I was interested for half a second, but shit, he’s an odd guy. I’m trying to get over a fucked-up guy. I do not need to jump right into another shitty situation.”

“But you’re ok with Stepford husband Todd? What a waste.” She rolled her eyes at me.
