CHAPTER NINE

WHEN THEY RETURNED to the house, Cade was different. The second they arrived on the patio, he tossed his shirt and jumped into the infinity pool. As a person who lived in Ohio, the heat got to Reese too, and she shucked her cover up and joined him.

Doing a slow backstroke, she floated on top of the water.

From beside her, Cade said, “This is nice.”

She opened one eye. “Yeah.” The perfection of it overwhelmed her and she pushed herself upright to tread water. “Seriously, thank you for letting me stay.”

He laughed. “It’s been fun having you here.”

She smiled.

He smiled.

For a few seconds they simply started at each other. Maybe remembering the past. Maybe enjoying the moment. Maybe realizing their intense connection was as natural as the rhythm of each heartbeat.

Maybe deciding that was okay.

Everything was okay here on the island.

A force that felt a lot like gravity pulled them together. Their lips met slowly, easily as they floated in the warm, soothing water. He slid one hand around her neck and the other to her lower back to steady her, but she eased her legs up, hooking them around his waist. He took advantage and moved his second hand to her back so he could tilt her and deepen the kiss.

Her breasts met his chest, her nipples hardening on contact. Her soul filled with contentment that knitted to reality. This was how it was supposed to be. Not frantic to stay one step ahead of the memory of fear. Not simple and regimented, as it had been with Tony. But fun and joyful. Natural like breathing. But passionate. So intense that thought wasn’t necessary.

And that’s what she needed. The reminder that every time a man touched her, she didn’t need to explain to herself why this feeling was allowed, why it was different from Finn.

She could simply enjoy.

The kiss went on and on. His hands roamed her back. Contentment rippled through her like the warm water bumping her legs and butt. Arousal awoke in her belly.

He broke the kiss to nuzzle her neck. “You’re so beautiful.”

She laughed. “So you’ve said.”

“Because it’s true.”

She skimmed her hands down his back, enjoying the solid muscles before she ran her tongue along his shoulders to his chest. “You’re salty.”

“The curse of being a fisherman.”

She laughed again and he brought her back to him for another long, lingering kiss. This time his hands moved from her back to her breasts and belly. She answered
