CHAPTER 19
The air was brisk and fresh when Emma and Carter followed the path from the back door to the barn. It smelled warm and clean inside. In the stalls, the workers raked hay for the horses the guides used when they took hunters to the flat tops.
âYou have quite a crew here.â Carter lifted a brow at Emma.
âI feel very fortunate to have found people who want to work hard,â she said with a laugh. âThey love the animals and working with them is always rewarding.â
âSome of these workers look like they should be in school.â He nodded to the teens who greeted them as they carried fresh straw to the stalls.
âMost of the kids in the area are homeschooled,â she said. âTheyâve had lessons since they were three and their reading levels exceed that of the kids in the public schools. Itâs very impressive. When my baby ⦠our baby is old enough, Iâll homeschool her.â
âI attended Middleton Prep.â Carter gave her a sharp look. âItâs an excellent school.â
âBut itâs a boarding school,â she said trying to still the horror she felt of sending her child across the country. When his eyes narrowed, she said, âWe have time to decide.â And time to convince him her way was best for their child.
As they walked through the barn, Emma pointed out the tack room and the maresâ birthing stall. She felt guilty not helping the workers but knew they had everything under control. She and Carter walked out the rear end of the barn.
âTo the south is the acreage where the cattle roam.â She indicated rolling hills dotted with aspen groves. âLast spring, we had a population explosion with many of the cows calving so this year weâll have a good herd to send to market.â
âWhen do you open up the lake?â He looked past her to the pier.
âProbably in a few weeks. Weâll need a couple of warm days for the rest of the ice to melt. Of course, we have some diehards who canât wait and ice fish in the winter. And we try and clear an area for skating.â She looked at him. âWeâve planned a hayride for the guests tonight if youâd like to join us.â
âA hayride sounds fun.â Carterâs surprise turned into a grin.
âGood.â She looked at him. âIf you need warm clothes, Iâm sure I can find something of my grandfatherâs for you to wear.â
âI brought warm clothes,â he said. âThough I havenât spent too many summers here, I do remember that the evenings are cool.â He released a deep laugh that flooded her body with warm tingling. How she missed those moments when they were together. Her breath caught. Thinking of those moments had to end.
âI need to get back to the house and start dinner.â She looked into blue eyes that had grown serious.
âI donât want you to overdo it,â he said, concern in his tone.
âThe doctor said I could do almost everything I did before I was pregnant.â She wanted to ease his concern.
