CHAPTER 11

Madison could barely breathe when she wished Oliver a good night and closed the door. Everything had been fine when they were together as friends, but something was changing. Was she ready for that?

She couldn’t forget his beach house filled with pictures of his late fiancée. He had someone else in his life. He didn’t want to let go of the woman he had planned to marry.

As long as Liz was still part of his life, being with Oliver seemed safe. He wasn’t looking. Neither was she.

Slowly, the safety of being with Oliver melted away.

Her phone rang, and she gave a soft gasp. Looking around, she tried to remember where she had left her phone. The ring came from the coat closet, and she dug through her jacket pockets to find it.

Shelly.

“Hey, Shell.” Her phone pressed between her ear and her shoulder, she picked up the cider mugs and carried them into the kitchen. “What’s up?”

“We’re moving,” Shelly squealed into the phone.

“You just rented that new apartment.” Madison washed the cups and set them in the dish drain next to the soup bowls, a reminder that she’d spent a wonderful evening with Oliver, so why did she feel uncomfortable? She moved into the living room and curled into the corner of the sofa.

“I know, but because Brian telecommutes, we can live anywhere. We placed an offer on a house in Connecticut, and it was accepted.” Excitement laced Shelly’s voice. “And this house will be the perfect place to raise our family.”

“You’re moving to Connecticut?” Madison sat up. The breakup with Todd had been tolerable because she’d had Shelly’s shoulder to cry on. She drew in a breath.

What’s your plan, Lord?

“You make it sound so far away, but it really isn’t,” Shelly said quickly. “And the door’s always open. As soon as we’re settled, we’ll invite everyone over. Now tell me about your date with Oliver.”

“Date?” A wave of shock crested, then receded, leaving Madison numb. “We worked at the food bank. I’d hardly call that a date.”

“But you had dinner.”

“Who told you that?” Madison gasped.

“Brian. He just talked to Oliver. You know they’re working on that software design together,” Shelly said.

Madison wanted to remind her friend that the only thing she knew about Oliver’s business was that he’d invented Clubby. Aside from that, she didn’t know anything else about Oliver’s business, or Brian’s, but she remained silent.

“You are going to see him again,” Shelly said.

“We didn’t make any plans.” Though Oliver had tried. Saturday nights she coached basketball at the rec center. That was a commitment she wouldn’t break for anyone.

“Madison.” Shelly’s tone held a warning.

“I’m sure we’ll see each other again.” Maybe at the housewarming for Shelly’s and Brian’s new home in Connecticut.

“I’m sure you will,” Shelly said, and Madison hoped she wasn’t concocting some plan. Now that she was happily married, she wanted everyone else to be. “I have to go, but we’ll talk soon. I’m working with an interior designer for the new house, and I can’t wait to show you the color scheme we picked.
