Chapter Sixteen

El took what comfort he could from Remi. It wasn’t going to get any better. He knew that, but God, Remi’s arms felt wonderful. Did he want to leave his mom, when she could slip away at any moment? No. But he’d promised her he’d live his life to his fullest. She was sleeping for now, Susie would watch over her and hopefully she still would be sleeping peacefully when he got back.

He didn’t plan to spend the night or anything, just take a little time to breathe. This was the calm before the storm.

“Let me finish cleaning up and we can go.” El reluctantly left the warmth Remi offered.

“I’ll help. We’ll get done faster. And, you don’t have to come over.” Remi rubbed his hands up and down El’s arms. It was comforting, and he needed as much of that as he could get.

“I promised her. It’s what she wants. She’s happy we’re going to give it a go—real dating and all. She’s worried about leaving me alone.”

“It’s just the two of you?”

El shrugged. “Yeah, I don’t know my dad. He left when I was little. I have Sara Jo, so I told Mom I’d be okay.” El moved to the sink and clutched the edge, gripping it so tight that his knuckles turned white. “I’m not going to be okay.” El covered his mouth with his hand to stifle the sob.

“Oh, El… I wish I could do something for you.”

“You are. Just you being here helps. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t been with me tonight.”

“Okay, let’s get this kitchen clean. Why don’t I rinse and put everything in the dishwasher? How about you go check on your mom again before we leave?”

El brushed his lips against Remi’s cheek and left him in the kitchen. Remi was so understanding. He’d guessed that El wouldn’t want to leave before he saw his mom one more time. He went to his mom’s room. She was asleep, so he wasn’t going to disturb her. He looked down at her and listened to her breathing. I shouldn’t leave.

He closed his eyes and stood for a moment, not moving, just being in the same room with her in a way he might not be able to for long. It was hard—waiting for her to pass. On one hand, it would be better for her, but it was going to hurt like a bitch for him. Sure, everyone died, but he thought he’d have more time with her. He was sure everyone felt that way when they lost a parent.

Remi was in the living room waiting for him when he returned.

“You all ready?”

“Yeah, she’s still sleeping for now. Susie, do you need anything before I leave? Are you sure it’s okay for me to go?”

“No, we’re good here. I have your number if anything changes. You’ve been at this for months. You need to take care of you as well. Okay? Don’t worry about us.”

“I know. She’s already
