CHAPTER 6
HEALTHY BODY, HAPPY BODY
âI heard a definition once: Happiness is health and a short memory! I wish Iâd invented it because it is very true.â
âAUDREY HEPBURN
It had been 15 days in Shangri-La, and the Billionaire had settled in well. Since there was Wi-Fi and a working desk in his suite, he was able to run his empire from the comfort of his room. The body had also begun to respond positively to the pure air, the simple food, and the regular long walks. My body was starting to age in reverse, thought the Billionaire.
Being a Tuesday evening, the hotel was quiet. Fewer guests and the weekly staff holiday resulted in a deserted lobby area. The Billionaire and the Monk sat idling their time, like two college kids talking about nothing. It was like the carefree salad days of youth.
âYou know, you are looking much fitter now, partner,â remarked the Monk.
âI know! Just this morning, I noticed a reduction in my waistline. My back pain is also better now. I am hoping to be able to get back on my Enfield bike from my college days, once I am back home,â said the Billionaire jokingly.
âYou know health is given a lot of attention in our monastic life,â a soft voice joined the conversation. âYou will recall, on a day that your body is sick, your spirit feels low and the heart depressed. This simple experience is sufficient to acknowledge that being unhealthy makes being happy difficult. It is, therefore, necessary to acknowledge and appreciate the value of a healthy body to your happiness quotient and treat the body accordingly.â
The Chief Lama was making sense. A healthy body did make one happy.
âWe believe a healthy body is a result of three fundamental aspects: nutrition, exercise, and rest. All three elements play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing your health. No single component is sufficient, and all three aspects should be balanced for a fit and happy body.
âYou must have heard of the American nutritionist Victor Lindlahr, who in the 1920s gave the Western world the phrase âyou are what you eat.â It means that the food you eat defines both your physical and mental well-being. We in Tibet have been practicing this for ages.
âThis phrase is more relevant in this era because we are surrounded by choices in food that were probably never available to humankind ever before. For
