SO SHE NOTICED A FAMILY resemblance. So what?

The question whizzed around Kirk’s mind as he helped Corrina dress, then lifted her into his truck to take her to school, about a half hour late. For an uncle and niece to bear common features wasn’t so unusual that he should have jumped like a startled jackrabbit when Renee had made the comment during breakfast. But for a split second, he’d felt like she was getting too close to the truth for comfort. Besides, he also did have a sister who was alive and well, and came this close to mentioning Katy. Then he remembered that Renee believed that Jill was his sister, and clamped his mouth shut before he could give anything away.

Kirk walked Corrina to the office and explained the reason for her tardiness. The office manager raised an eyebrow. “Most people just admit they overslept.” She ripped off a tardy pass and filled it out.

“Uncle Kirk.” Corrina’s stage whisper that could have been heard out into the hallway. “Why she mad?”

“I guess,” he replied in a matching tone, “she needs to oversleep a bit more often.”

“Very funny.” The woman handed him the pass.

“Have a nice day,” Kirk said to her, winking, “and call me if you see any fires.” He left hand-in-hand with Corrina without waiting for a reply.
