Chapter Nine

"I got that small dome tent, the green one," Mr. Oleson was saying on my left side.

"I brought my big dome. The one I bought at Bass Pro Shop last summer with my haying money," I said. "It's plenty big for the two of us." It was. It had seemed, even a few days after I had made the purchase, frivolous. What did one girl need with such a huge tent? Now it seemed like a god send.

"I know, but just in case," he said.

"Just in case what? It's brand new." It had been like pulling teeth to get Sam to come along and now Mr. Oleson was threatening to undo my planning with his thoughtfulness.

"The goats need one small bucket of feed each, twice a day," Sam began on my right, "and one bale of hay for each four."

"He knows," I said. "You wrote it on a clipboard in the barn."

"And I have done chores before," he said.

"I know but we've had them on extra feed because of the milking. Now that they are drying off we need to reduce the feed slowly."

"He knows how to take care of goats," I put in, cutting Sam off.

"One of you two have a flashlight?" Mr. Oleson asked.

"Yes," we both answered together.

God, sitting between the two of them was starting to get on my nerves. Mr. Oleson acted like this was an arctic expedition and neither of us had ever camped before. Sam, who took her animals very seriously, was telling her dad how to do chores, never mind that she was technically doing chores for him in the first place. By the time Ledges State Park came into view I was so freaking happy to see it.

"Hey Alecia," a warm voice greeted me as I climbed out of Mr. Oleson's pickup truck. I turned and saw Jasper Engels walking up.

How to describe Jasper? Physically, he is tall and on the edge of being overweight. He's got dark curly hair and an earring. Right there it is, he's got an earring. He's the only boy in school that has his ear pierced. But it's more than that. Jasper is cool, but it's not a high school sort of cool. He's not a jock or popular. He's into theater, in fact he was lead in Jesus Christ Superstar last year.

Some of the guys think Jasper is gay, and according to one rumor he's even admitted to being bi. That should make him an outcast in a small school like this, but somehow it hasn't. Because he's cool. He's like college kid cool and he knows it. So the little things don't really bother him since he knows in a year or two he's going to be the coolest kid at whatever college he goes to. If the small town rednecks don't like him, so what?

"Brad and John invited me and Suzie to this little shindig," he told me as he came up. This was news to me. "We are at site six. Can I help carry some stuff?"

"Sure," Mr.
