TWENTY-SIX

The second Neeta launches her glass at Ted, he jumps up out of his seat. His back is facing me but it’s not hard to imagine, seeing his jerky, quick movements, that his face is a mask of fury. Neeta’s actions back this up when she freezes momentarily and then turns and flees inside the house. Ted follows swiftly, knocking his chair over in the process.

I stand there, peering through the blind. Neeta shouldn’t have done that but… my heart is thumping and Ted is acting aggressively and I feel like I definitely need to do something… but what, exactly? Ted is much bigger and stronger than Neeta, but I can hardly ring the police on the strength of him looking annoyed.

I run downstairs and see Albie is still happily watching television.

‘You OK?’ I ask from the doorway of the lounge.

‘Yeah,’ he says vaguely without taking his eyes from the screen.

I push my feet into Neil’s old Crocs and slip out of the kitchen door quietly, heading down to the bottom of our small garden. It’s been a pleasant day and the air is still warm. I take a deep breath in, tasting the tang of the salty sea air on my tongue.

When I peer through the trees, I have a partial view of the empty balcony. I can see the sliding doors to the bedroom are still open, so I stay still and listen. Nothing. There’s no shouting or even raised voices.

I feel somewhat relieved. If it had been obvious the Williamses were fighting, I’d have felt obliged to do something. Apart from ringing the police, I would have had no choice but to try and contact Neil, or to go round there and check Neeta was OK.

Everyone knows that domestic violence victims often suffer in silence. Violence within relationships transgresses all sorts of boundaries and just because the Williamses are a well-respected, wealthy and much-liked couple in the community, it doesn’t mean that Neeta isn’t being terrorised behind the luxurious glass and steel walls of Seaspray House.

After another couple of minutes of standing there, my head cocked, listening for sounds of distress, I go back inside.
