At Leopold’s request, Emily and Giselle made a list of entertainments for the steward’s group. They were a small group, so they couldn’t perform large and extravagant feats, but Emily and Giselle both agreed to sing and play the piano on certain nights.

There was lawn tennis and croquet—both standard outdoor pastimes—and the card and board games that everyone enjoyed. They looked into the supplies they had inside the great house and discovered bows and arrows in an upstairs room used for storage. Emily suggested an archery contest, and Quinn commented that with several sailing boats on the island they could hold a small boat race if the weather was fair.

Giselle excitedly came up with the idea of a scavenger hunt across the small island. Depending upon how many people came with the steward’s group, they could split into groups of two or three. Each group would be given clues, and if they went to the right spot, they would find another clue to move on until they found the final clue and won the game.

“It will be such fun!” Giselle exclaimed. “The day before, we can take Tavish and place the hints around the island.”

“But you and I will know where the hints are,” Emily reasoned.

“True. So if we are placed on teams, we won’t help our group, just assist them as they search the estate.”

“What sort of hints will be given?” Emily asked.

“We can give a hint that these things are used for storage and perishable foods. So they must search the cleits.”

“All of them? There are so many on the island!”

“Exactly. So we can place a hint in several different ones for the groups to find.”

Emily nodded. “Maybe a hint leading to the wine cellar.”

“Exactly!”

“Or the orangery!”

“Perfect!”

The two women smiled at each other as the plan formed before them.

“What are you two on about?” Leopold asked as he entered the library.

“We have the most fantastic idea for the steward’s group. A scavenger hunt!” Giselle told him.

“A scavenger hunt? Excellent idea.”

“It was Giselle’s idea,” Emily admitted.

“It was, but so what? We’ll come up with ideas for the hints together. It will be such fun.” Giselle left the library, nibbling on the end of her pencil.

“It’s good to see her animated,” Leopold spoke. “I think she suffers from melancholy alone here without Adam.”

“It’s natural. She’s a young girl full of life.”

“As are you.”

“Yes, but I’m a widow.”

Leopold paused momentarily as he lit his cigar and then puffed on it. “I hope to have Adam home soon enough. He won’t be here long, but perhaps long enough.”

“Long enough?” Emily frowned.

“Long enough for certain acts to take effect. I think that might help Giselle’s loneliness.”

Emily realized her father-in-law hoped that Adam and Giselle would come together to create a child. The thought of a child in the house caused her to smile, and then it saddened her. She had wanted to create a child with Phillip, but it had never happened.

“I agree, my lord. Giselle would make a wonderful mother. She is full of love.
