Chapter 8 - Blake

“Is that really necessary?” Marcia asked. “It sounds dangerous. What if someone gets trapped inside?”

“We’ll make sure everyone’s safe,” Blake said. “We’ve got it all figured out, alright. We have super-hearing and super-smell, alright? We’ll definitely be able to comb the place.”

“And it’s not that big,” Michael filled in.

Marcia grabbed Blake’s wrist, pulling him aside even though there was no getting out of hearing range from his brothers. The concern on her face warmed him, and he couldn’t help a smile. She frowned at it. This wasn’t a tete-a-tete moment, this was her being truly worried for him. For them all. He killed the smile.

“This was what you discussed before?” she asked. “You don’t have enough information to go on to make this type of decision, do you? And not to be like that but what if…?” She paused, then pressed on with, “What if this medicine or whatever it is could save lives? Not that wolves should be trapped and suffer but if you destroy all that research…”

“We won’t,” he assured her. “That’s not what this is about. Peter and Olive work for the company and Ella—the hacker—has been working on getting into the company mainframe for the past week. She’s almost there. Once she is she’ll be able to download the research.”

“Can’t that be detected?” Marcia asked.

“Not when the hacker is as good as Ella,” Michael said, joining the conversation. “Sorry,” he added. “Kind of difficult to avoid listening in.”

Marcia offered him a small smile in acknowledgment of that fact, but the worry was deepening. Blake deduced by the look on her face that she was far from convinced, and the fact that she didn’t seem to want any harm to come to them after only spending a day together made Blake feel some kind of way.

Well, technically it had been three years and a day, hadn’t it?

“Do you think we can trust Jeremy?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” Blake admitted. “He strikes me as someone who’s been around for a long time, seen more than his fair share. But that doesn’t make him trustworthy.”

“We should go,” Mason said.

Blake’s gaze drifted to him, then to Michael.

“We’re going to have to head out to the facility anyway,” Michael said. “Right?”

Blake drew a soft breath, sighing it out as he turned his eyes to Marcia.

He didn’t want to leave her.

Last night he had been determined to dig his heels in because this was the home that he had built for himself and his daughter, and he’d be damned if his past was going to come and shake its foundations. But now he felt like digging them in so that he wouldn’t have to part ways with this woman who felt as though she was the part that had been missing all along.

True mates.

He barely even knew what the words meant, but he was beginning to suspect that they perfectly described this feeling in his chest.

He wanted to reach out, stroke his hands through her tresses, pull her to him as though they were already a couple.
