Chapter 14

Shiro forgot Pitch was in the kitchen. The occasional bang or curse penetrated his bubble as he decorated the cake, but it didn’t bother him. He never got in his way and after a little while, he’d stopped asking questions and left Shiro to do his job.

He’d never met a dominant who didn’t constantly demand his attention. Having Torben in the kitchen had been a nightmare, not only because it was Torben, but because he constantly got in Shiro’s way—deliberately, so Shiro would have to sidestep not to collide with him. And while Bernard didn’t interfere with his work as such, he made sure Shiro was focused on him. Pitch left him to work. He was there, and Shiro was aware of him watching him, but he didn’t interrupt.

“I think it’s done.” He spun the cake, inspecting it. The piped cream swirls, the passion fruit on the top with chocolate spirals and physalis. It wasn’t the most advanced cake he’d created, but it was pretty with the soft yellow base and the more intense yellow from the passion fruit and the physalis.

“What do you think?” It wasn’t until the words were out of his mouth, he realized what he was doing. It was Pitch in the kitchen, not Astra. You did not ask a dominant what they thought unless you were willing to change your creation. Torben often had him redo entire cakes because he found something he didn’t like about it—despite knowing nothing about cakes other than how to eat them.

“Amazing. You’re really good.”

Shiro’s heart beat fast and it was hard to fit air into his lungs. “It’s nothing. Not the design I’d planned, but I didn’t have time—”

“It’s pretty, Shiro. I don’t think they’ll mind they got this design instead.”

Shiro nodded and stepped away to increase the distance between them. Standing close to Pitch made him nervous. Not as nervous as it had before, but he preferred him in wolf form. “I’ll put it in a box. It should have some time to cool before they come and get it.” Not much though. They would be here in a little while.

Carrying the box with the cake to the refrigerator, he took in the kitchen. Pitch had cleaned it up. “Are we calling the cops?” He didn’t want to go into the sitting area to see the dominants waiting for him. He’d kept the panic at bay by focusing on the cake, but now his hands shook.

“Is it time?” Pitch’s eyes turned the color of whiskey again.

“I don’t know.” Shiro wished he could hide. He wished he had a bunker or a basement where he could lock himself up and never come out again. He didn’t want a mate.

He’d never forget when Bernard had knocked on his door to inform him Torben had been killed in a fight outside a bar in the middle of Shifterville. He’d known he was dead since the bond had broken, but he still didn’t know who had killed him. He didn’t care.
