Flying down the mountainside, fog thick in the black trees, snow slipping and crunching beneath her furry boots. Old Jarlund was a clever coot—the smartest around, even Father had to give him that—but all the wits in the world wouldn’t be able to explain the fur-lined crates of reindeer milk stacked and loaded on a sled pointed at the Hone cabin—the only freehold up that way. Which was exactly how deliveries ran these days. Modró would know instantly that Father was buying milk. And he’d know why.
