ON WEDNESDAY 18 December, Hughes and Sowter were on the streets calling in to all the hotels to see if they could stir up the underworld. They saw Gillies walk into the New City Hotel and sit beside Don Bailey. Soon after, Bailey left leaving Gillies alone to finish his drink. Sowter followed Bailey and gave him a grilling. Hughes bought a bottle of beer and sat down opposite Gillies, wordlessly staring him down. Gillies showed no emotion, but his body language suggested he was downcast. He confided he was aware police were watching him but said he had nothing to hide. He was desperate to find legitimate work and was anxious because he could not afford his rent at the Rembrandt. Perhaps, he asked, the good detective could lend him a fiver?

‘No, I can’t,’ said Hughes, ‘but I do know that Detective Inspector Walton has £1000 at his disposal. Shall we go and have a chat to him?’ Gillies shifted uncomfortably and muttered he would think about it. Hughes left, asking Dirk to give him a call at the station at 5.15 if he had changed his mind. The call never came and watching officers reported Gillies did not return to the Rembrandt that night.
