“Pop...” Dick Lambert shrieked from the door of the empty kitchen. “Pop...”

It was getting dark; he turned on the light and saw someone had been cleaning in here; the dishes were washed, the table clear... and her chair was gone. Probably too rank to even try to salvage.

“Popppp...”

He raced down the narrow hall to the open door of her room, and there was the old man at her dresser. The drawers were open, with some of the clothes already packed in boxes; the mattress in a roll on the bare springs.

Larry Lambert grinned doggily at his son. “They did it, Bub. Lerner and another guy came about eleven, carried on a little, then left. And a few hours later, here comes a lady bailiff rigged up like Robocop. And two men in white coats....” He cackled shrilly. “They really had on white coats, Bub. Strapped Ma to this hydraulic business and hauled her off. They had papers all signed, sealed, and blue-backed.”

“Oh, God...” Dick moaned.

“Got them in my room. Wanna see them?”

Dick sagged against the door frame, head hanging.

“What’s the matter,” asked his father with a touch of irony. “You gonna miss her so much?”

Dick looked up at his father without raising his head, so his eyes gleamed from under his brows. Larry took a step backward.

“It was supposed to be Monday,” Dick said softly. “He wasn’t supposed to come for her until Monday.”

“Yeah... well, guess they didn’t feel the need to check their schedule with you. They came, saw her, got what they needed from the judge, and had the whole thing rolling lickety-split. Makes sense, I guess. Once you’re going to do something like that, no sense crapping around, letting everyone tense up, if you know what I—”

“Fuck,” Dick screeched and charged his father. Larry tried to get away, but the room was cell-sized, and he backed into the wall. Dick grabbed a fistful of shirt front and hefted him up until his toes just scraped the floor.

“You limp old prick... you total hunk of shit...” Dick screamed and spat, and Larry blinked against the splats of saliva. He turned red, then a sick dusky color as his son’s fist dug into his windpipe, and he gagged. Dick let him go. He toppled, grabbed the ajar drawer to save himself, and it slid out and upended. A cloud of soft, diaphanous, pastel-colored cloth puffed out, filling the air. They stared in amazement as the cloud separated into scarves and slips, panties, bras, and hose, and pale-colored nighties—and settled around them, soft as mist.

“Undies,” Larry said in a hushed tone. “Her undies...”

Dick stared at the lovely things, unable to imagine his grandmother owning, much less wearing them; yet she must have, because they were not new, but had been carefully laundered and ironed and put away in this secret drawer, in this tiny filthy room.

He felt a jarring stab of grief for the woman who’d folded these lovely things and put them away years ago. His eyes burned, tears
