Chapter Five

Sighing, I laid back down on my couch. It was an afternoon only a few days later in the week and I was at home again. Hawking had taken me to my car and driven me home after I'd fainted and then left on his own to track down where Phoenix's trail stopped at. He hadn't come back yet.

I turned the music on my mp3 up louder, hoping the familiar beat of my favorite band would block out my own thoughts. It didn't.

My eyes closed, so I jumped in surprise when someone tapped my arm. I could feel warm breath on my face. I opened my eyes as Hawking pulled my ear buds from my ears. He smiled and kissed my nose, before saying, “I think I've found him, love.”

“Where is he?” I asked, wanting to run to Phoenix, even if it really was only his body that was left of him.

“He's in the vampire Kingdom,” Hawking answered, unmoving.

“Then there's no way we can get him,” I murmured sadly.

“No way you can get him.”

“Why? Can you?”

“Yes, of course. But you and Gwen won't be able to.” He looked away, not meeting my eyes.

“Yes, we can,” I retorted. “Otherwise the two of you might get in a fight or something.”

The look on his face was a mixture of shock and hurt, but I still didn't trust it. “I wouldn't fight with him.”

“Yes you would.” I locked eyes with him.

“So?”

“So I'm going with you!”

“What about Gwen?” he wondered, a grin spreading across his face.

“She's going too. Otherwise she'll follow us. She did that last time.” I thought about how she's hot-wired her mom's car and had somehow figured out where we were going in less time than Phoenix had.

“Really? How do you know that?”

“She came to a hotel that Phoenix and I had to stay in. It was…unusual.” My cheeks turned red at the thought.

“Why? Did something happen?” His eyes burned intensely into mine.

“I was in a bathrobe. I was glad that she'd brought some of my clothes with her.” Hawking was silent, so I said, “Nothing happened, okay?” He remained silent. “Can I sit up now?” I tried to push him away, but he wouldn't budge.

“No,” he said quietly. “I like it better like this.” He smiled mischievously.

“Well I don't, so let me up!” I attempted to shove him away. He did the opposite; he moved closer so that our foreheads were touching. Hawking grinned in amusement. “I'm serious Hawking,” I said angrily, “Let me up!”

“What's wrong? You don't like being this close?”

“No, I don't.”

“Why?”

“Because it's making me uncomfortable.”

“Really?”

“Yes.” His questions were starting to annoy me.

“Mind if I make you more uncomfortable?” he grinned slyly.

“Yes, I would mi––” My words were cut off as he pressed his lips to mine. The kiss was fierce, demanding, and I squeezed my eyes shut, knowing I couldn't escape. A knock sounded on the door and I opened my eyes again. Hawking ignored it, too involved in kissing me. The knock came again.

“That's very annoying,” he muttered, pulling away enough that I could breathe again, “It's probably Gwen.
