Not far from the team’s location on the banks of the Danube, Chief Inspector Sergi Boraviko, along with Police Chief Branko Valpovo, looked over the bloody crime scene.

Valpovo said, “The killer entered the pumping station through the opening and fired his weapon from there. Three spent cartridges were left on the ground where the killer felled his victims. Blood and brain matter is still splattered against the back wall, suggesting the he fired with the victim’s back facing him.”

Boraviko looked at the victims and nodded his head in agreement. “You’re right about the killer—an absolute professional, cold, ruthless, highly organized—yet he doesn’t just kill on sight, there was a reason. He obviously knew the three men were here and entered unnoticed through the opening.”

Boraviko looked around inside the structure. “It must have been dark in here last night. To be this accurate, the killer must have had a laser sight or night vision hardware, otherwise it would have been a difficult shot.”

Boraviko bent over and looked at the bra and shredded blouse. “These are all locally manufactured. They belong to a young woman, slender in build—she could be a local.”

Boraviko placed the bra and blouse in a plastic bag then picked up one of the spent casings and examined it closer. “These are 9.3 mm rounds, virtually impossible to trace. Show me the victim outside.”

Valpovo showed Sergi the victim outside near the front of the station, “This man was caught by surprise—his rifle is still slung over his shoulder, and he’s still holding his fly. We found one shell casing up the road in the bushes, another 9.3 mm. The shooter fired from that location.”

“Four shell casings, four dead bodies. There could be more than one shooter, or it could be a team working together,” Boraviko said thinking out loud. “Collect the casings, and I’ll have them analyzed back at MUP headquarters. Photograph the entire area then remove the bodies. I’ll take over from here.”

Boraviko turned and looked toward the access road heading up to the main road. He thought to himself for a moment then looked back at Valpovo and asked one final question, “By the way, chief, have you noticed any unusual activity in the minefields lately?”
