Chapter 20

The Ballet at the Winter Palace

When they arrived at the Winter Palace Johnny was gobsmacked at the size and beauty of the most elegant building he had ever seen. I bet even Buckingham Palace is not as grand as this, he thought. (Johnny had seen Buckingham Palace when he had been summoned to Whitehall.)

He was even more in awe when he saw the splendour inside such as the great halls and antiquities. The statues and the chandeliers were immense. He had never seen so much wealth displayed in one place before.

The rumours were right, Tsarina Alexandra did attend the function and so did her children along with Rasputin and Tomas. In fact Alexandra had arranged for a very special treat for her children and the diplomats, a very, very special performance of the Nutcracker Suite by the Tomas Tomaschevski Animal Dance Troupe.

The evening started with a fabulous banquet followed by drinks and a chance for meeting and talking whilst the main ballroom was prepared for the ballet.

Reilly caught hold of Johnny and introduced him to Rasputin who had been looking forward to meeting the European boxing champion. “I have been told they call you the Happy Warrior Johnny, did you think that boxing would bring you all the way to Russia and a visit to the Winter Palace when you were just a boy?” he asked Johnny.

Reilly acted as interpreter.

Johnny was just about to warn Rasputin of the plot to kill him when they were all summoned to the main ballroom for a special treat.

Tsarina Alexandra addressed the guests herself and told them of her pride in being given the opportunity to meet and care for the amazing Tomas Tomaschevski and his wonderful animal troupe, who she and her family had grown to love.

She told them the story of saving Babushka’s farm and everyone applauded. She finished by asking them to be seated and enjoy The Tomas Tomaschevski Animal Dance Troupe’s version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.

They took their seats and Johnny sat next to Rasputin in the second row behind the Royal family.

“You’ll like this ballet Johnny, Jerzy and Irena are fantastic dancers and Bruce the Boxing Clown makes a menacing Mouse King,” said Rasputin.

They were then beguiled by the most bizarre yet amazing performance of the Nutcracker ever seen. Everyone cheered and applauded Jerzy and Irena and when Alexei and Anastasia booed Bruce, they all joined in.

For Johnny who had never been to a ballet before, it was just like a pantomime. When Minsky came out as the Sugar Plum Fairy, they all laughed and cheered and marvelled at the land of sweets where Tinsky and Dinsky added a bit of mischief which was hilarious.

The ballet was a complete success and everyone gave it a standing ovation at the end.

Jerzy and Irena may not
