CHAPTER 8

Nicole Swensen

After her day of travel back from California, on Saturday morning, Jen was happy to go through her usual routine—Peloton ride, shower, a light breakfast. She was just about to open her computer when she heard her phone. Glancing at the screen, she could see that it was Maddy.

“Hey, sis,” she answered.

“Back from California?”

“Yes, I got back last night.”

“And how did it go?”

Jen decided not to tell Maddy about the attack in Laguna Beach.

“Well, Pat Farnsworth and I had many hours of productive and informative talks. I also happened to meet some local people who, truth to tell, weren’t very enthusiastic about her.”

“Oh, you mean that you ran into people with actual brains?”

Jen had expected a jab like that from Maddy, who was no friend of progressive politics. She often referred to her state as ‘The People’s Republic of Virginia’ and said for some reason that her idea of a great president was Grover Cleveland.

“Well, Maddy, you’ll be surprised to hear me say this, but those people did indeed have brains—just as Pat Farnsworth does. I learned a lot about her career and her presidency. I also learned that some Californians have a low opinion of her. They gave me much to think about.”

“I’m surprised to hear you say that, Jen, pleasantly surprised. Feel like telling me more?”

“Sometime, Maddy—not just now.”

“Okay but I’m dying to find out what has shaken your admiration of the great Pat Farnsworth. Have you gotten started on your book yet?”

“No, I still want to contact a few more people and then I’ll have to do some serious thinking about how to approach the biography. You know that Schubert had his Unfinished Symphony; at this point, Jennifer Van Arsdale has her Unbegun Biography. I’m not worried, though. I have six months to get it written.”

Maddy chuckled. “Very funny, Jen. Now here’s why I’m calling. In case you’ve forgotten, today is Bonnie’s third birthday and we’re having a birthday dinner and cake for her. Want to come over around five? And if you could stay with her this evening, that would save Josh and me the cost of a babysitter when we go to the concert this evening.”

“Sounds good to me, Maddy. I’ll be there.”

Jen checked the time. It was just after 10:00. Would it be all right to call someone in Eastern time on a Saturday morning? The first person on Greg’s list was in Ohio and in their email exchange, the woman had said that Saturday morning would be fine. She decided to make the call.

Jen punched in Professor Nicole Swensen’s number in an area code she was sure she had never before called—741.

A soft woman’s voice promptly answered. “This is Nicole Swensen. How may I help you?”

“Good morning, Professor Swensen. This is Jennifer Van Arsdale. You’ll recall that I recently contacted you by email. I would appreciate any time you can give me to talk about your former Dartmouth classmate and now our former president, Patricia Farnsworth.”

“Oh, certainly. I’m now retired and have lots of time to talk.
