Chapter 25
The ambulance made good time and got Tia admitted right away into the emergency room. Because he wasnât immediate family, Spencer was forced to wait in the lobby for an update. Two hours had passed and all he knew so far was that Tia had a dozen stitches at her temple and was undergoing a scan to see the extent of the damage, if any. He prayed there wouldnât be any, but with the hit to the head, accompanied by the fall she took, it would be a miracle if she got out of this with nothing but a scar and a few bruises.
The first hour was spent answering questions and filing a report with the police. He called Vivian and left three urgent voice messages. Still no word. A call was also placed to Marcelo to come to the hospital to drive them home when Tia could be released. He prayed she would be released and wouldnât have to stay overnight. After his two phone calls, there was nothing left to do but wait. His feet nearly wore treads on the waiting room floor with his constant walking. Since pacing back and forth only agitated him, Spencer chose to walk the perimeter of the waiting area, then walk outside, only to walk back in again and repeat the pattern. Sitting down made him anxious. He had to keep moving.
When another thirty minutes went by and still no word, his patience was shot. His phone suddenly rang and he answered without looking at the display. His voice was terse in greeting. âSpencer Chadwick.â
âSpencer!â Vivianâs voice was frantic through the line. âI just got your messages. Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
He informed Vivian of which hospital and where exactly to find him, then continued to walk his pattern, all the while willing a nurse or doctor to approach him with news. Good news.
Twenty minutes later, Vivian rushed through the emergency doors. She saw him right away and her stomach dipped. There was dried blood all over his shirt and pants. âOh, God,â she whispered, then raised her voice. âSpencer!â
Mid-step, he turned when he heard his name. Vivian ran to him, her features full of worry. Any time he had seen Vivian she looked polished and professional. It was interesting to see her without a touch of makeup on. Her fair skin was porcelain smooth, her auburn hair fell to her chin in a bob, her soft blue eyes were wet with tears. She wore loose jeans and a silk sweater with designer sneakers on her feet. An interesting observation, he noticed, as he was frazzled with worry. He met her halfway and embraced her when she held out her arms.
âIs she ok?â Vivian inquired.
âI donât know yet. All I know is that she has stitches and theyâre doing a scan on her right now. I dealt with the police.â He pulled a business card out of his pocket. âI insisted they leave, but they want to question Tia.
