CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
ALEIDA SAT HUDDLED on the dirt floor in the corner of the hut where she’d been held captive for the past few hours. After being dragged through camp and dumped here, they’d told her Captain Robert would return soon. Thinking of being in the same room with the vile man without Captain Avery to protect her made her stomach twist into agonizing knots. But Captain Avery wasn’t here and as hope dwindled, she realized there was no way he could find her. Her eyes burned from the tears she’d cried, trying to accept her fate.
The door flew open, and she gasped, pulling her knees to her chest. Finn stormed into the hut and grabbed her by the elbow, yanking her to her feet. Aleida screamed and struggled against his vise-like grip, but he dragged her outside.
“Shut up!” he said, giving her a shake while he pulled her across the camp. The menacing eyes of the rest of the group followed her until he dragged her to a hut across the way.
Opening the door, he pushed her inside. Vincenzo stood grinning, chewing on a piece of grass.
“Please! Let me go! Please!” she begged.
“I said shut up!” Finn threw her to the ground. Aleida shrieked as she hit the hard ground and tried to pull herself back to her feet.
“Well, well, well... what do we have here?” Captain Robert’s voice came from the shadows on the other side of the hut. Springing to her feet, she turned around with fear-filled eyes to see the large man emerging from the dark corner of the room. Even in the dark she could see his black eyes beaming with excitement at the sight of her. “Well done, men. Bring her here.”
Vincenzo pushed her forward until she stood in front of him, her knees shaking beneath her skirt. Captain Robert stalked around her like a shark.
“Yer even prettier than I remember. Yer gonna bring a nice price when I sell you... eventually,” he said, his dagger lifting her long wavy hair and sliding down toward her breasts pushed up from her leather bustier. “I guess ye do make a good consolation prize. Ye can blame Captain Avery for yer situation. He should have just given me back that sword. It was the first sword I took when I killed my first man. Sentimental value and all.” He smiled, and his gold tooth flashed in the candlelight.
“Please. Captain Robert, I had nothing to do with that. Please, just let me go and I’ll make sure Captain Avery returns your sword. I promise.” She fought back her tears.
“Not yer fault, huh? If I do recall, it was ye walking on the beach that started this whole thing. If it weren’t for ye I wouldn’t have lost my sword. If it weren’t for ye I wouldn’t have this wrapped around my maimed hand!” He shoved his bandage-covered hand in her face. “So actually, dear, this is yer fault. Not to worry though. I’ve moved past it. Ye will
