Nick and Jelena were exhausted from all the visiting by the time they took the boat across the sea to Venice. “I’m glad we have a few days to ourselves,” Jelena said.

“I agree. It will give us a chance to rest up before the return voyage. Let’s hope it’s smoother sailing.”

After they arrived at the dock, Nick hired a gondola to take them to their hotel. “Baglioni Hotel Luna, per favore.” The gondolier paddled through a series of canals until he arrived at the dock entrance to the hotel, only steps away from San Marco Square. A doorman stepped up to help Jelena and Nick disembark and handle their luggage. He guided them to the reservations desk where a clerk was awaiting them with a smile. “Buongiorno.”

The clerk did the required paperwork and checked their passports. Then he handed a large bronze key, attached to a disk bearing the number 314, to the bellman who already had the suitcases on a cart, ready to go.

“Follow me, per favore.”

Their room had a canal view. It was small but elegantly decorated with damask wallpaper in gold tones. The full-size bed had a provincial headboard and duvet that matched the wallpaper. A beautiful Aubusson rug covered most of the hardwood floor. Nick was quick to tip the doorman, who knew to take his leave. Then he wrapped Jelena in his arms. “Our honeymoon is about to take on a new dimension.”
