It is enough, said Albert; and we have only now to pass sentence on them.

Just then Grodern entered the church; and was asked wherefore he had fled—“To screen my grey hairs from wanton insult, did I retire: I now deliver myself, and wait thy mercy. Yet, Albert, I warn thee, consider well what thou art about; if life is taken away from any here unjustly, it will be required of thee again at the hands of thy Maker,” said he.—My pleasure then, is this, replied Albert: That you, Grodern, do immediately pass sentence on Brunchilda and her accomplices, whom we hold guilty of having attempted by most wicked and malevolent practices, to take away the lives of several innocent persons. Much power I give into your hands. To do justice to the poor man, I deliver up the wife of my bosom, the princess of these domains; be just: but oh, be merciful!

Albert now hid his face in his hands, and was a while lost in sorrow: He hated vice, and mourned at the view wherever he beheld it.

Grodern, after a pause, replied, Let her pass one moon in the mysterious apartments of thy castle, and let not one of her friends be admitted to her presence; let all the rest be confined in the dungeon of the castle, and kept to hard labour for one whole year: let all the profits of their work be given to Jacquemar; and as the treacherous Edward, under the name of Alwin, was chiefly the cause of Dunisleda’s death, let his property be sold, and the money given to her babes.

Albert, raising his head, said, Old man, you are merciful indeed! I feared you would have doomed her to die, and would have demanded her property. Wherefore do you ask no recompense for your own injuries?

I want not property; my son can labour; but the babes of Dunisleda have lost their mother and support: the father cannot attend to them whilst he pursues his work.—Thou askest wherefore I doomed her not to death? We have no right to deprive her of that which we did not give: life is the gift of Heaven, and Heaven alone has right to claim it back; besides, although she wished our deaths, she has not gained her wishes.

Reader, thou shalt not be delayed from other concerns, by a description of the various feelings which agitated the bosoms or coloured the features of the different people assembled in the nave when Albert confirmed this sentence; we leave thee to fancy all that malice, rage, vexation, shame, wonder, joy, and gratitude can cause, and thou wilt know all I can tell thee; for all that they could was now caused by them.
