AIDEN SLEPT DEEP AND dreamlessly that night. There was something about transitioning from one life to the next that caused that to happen, though he would never understand why.

The morning after graduating can always feel a little like this is the first day of the rest of your life, but of course, it felt even more so to Aiden.

He had been disconcerted when he had opened his eyes at a different spot in his life. He thought he had at least one thing figured out about this weird series of lives. Now, waking up in a completely unexpected place in time had yanked the rug out from under him.

He had no idea what time Jimmy had come in the night before. He glanced at the wind-up alarm clock on the table between the two twin beds in the room they shared. That clock usually shrilled its alarm at 6:45 during the school year, but was now silenced for the summer.

Aiden slipped out of bed and quietly opened the drawers of the dresser until he found clothes that looked like they belonged to him instead of Jimmy. It would be easy to tell when he put the jeans on, since he was four inches taller. He snuck quietly around the room, not wanting to wake up Jimmy, though as potentially hung over as he was, each step might have been a cymbal crash and still not woken him.

He padded down the hall to the bathroom, got dressed, brushed his teeth, and was ready to face the day, more or less.

Aiden was painfully aware that the Steeles had taken him in to get him through school, and school was over now. He didn’t think he was going to get his walking papers with breakfast, but he also didn’t want to take advantage of them. He knew he needed to make a plan, and quickly.

He had some memory of spending most of the summer with them in his first life, but he had been a true teenager then. He was an adult now, albeit in a teenager’s body.

Robert and Nora were back in the same spots he had left them the day before, though Robert looked more alert this morning. He had the paper spread open in front of him.

“Sit down, Aiden. I’ll get you some cereal.”

“Thank you, ma’am,” Aiden said.

A moment later, Nora slipped a large bowl of Cheerios in front of him with half a banana sliced into it, just like he liked it.

“Any plans for your first day of freedom from the chains of academic life?” she asked.

“Nothing as concrete as I should have, probably. I need to find a job.”

“Tough to start a job search on a Saturday,” Nora said. “You should take the weekend off and just enjoy yourself.”

That’s nice. No pressure to pack up and get moving on.

“I think I’ll go for a bike ride this morning. You don’t think Jimmy will mind if I borrow his bike, do you?”

“He hasn’t touched it since he got his car, so no, I don’t think he’ll mind.
