Chapter 7

A week passed in relative peaceful bliss. Victoria and Anya spent their days apart, pursuing their own ends. Anya tended to her shop, and Victoria avoided working on her dissertation by reading the books in the Skejik family library, wandering through the two massive greenhouses, and checking up on the repairs to her own house. Anything to avoid the looming deadline and the frustration of a missing source. Evenings were spent in quiet reading, conversation, and snuggling in front of the television and watching the occasional television program, usually Jeopardy or another game show.

Victoria’s phone became her wireless hotspot, as Anya had neither a computer nor Internet access in her home. Cellular and wireless Internet service proved spotty throughout most of Pazat, and as Anya had no need of such things, she never bothered to acquire them for her home or her shop. While quaint and quirky at first, the struggle of slow, unreliable Internet access plus the frustration of keeping her phone charged while it ran hot from constant use, became an annoyance.

On this chilly Thursday afternoon, a thunderstorm rumbled over a Pazat, casting an ominous shadow over the town square. The wind howled as it tore through the muddy streets, whipping debris and leaves in its wake. Dark clouds rolled overhead, turning the afternoon into a dim, gray twilight. Thunder pealed, and lightning forked across the sky, illuminating the mountains in brief flashes of blinding light. The sound of rain was a dull but constant roar. It pounded against the roofs and streets, creating pools of water that flowed along the paths created by tire tracks in the dirt roads and through the fields. Through the lights in the buildings surrounding the town square, a traveler could see how deserted the square was, as no one ventured out of their home or business unless need dictated.

The black carriage rested just outside the back door to Skejik Toys. Anya sewed stuffed animals together in the workroom while Victoria walked through the showroom snapping photographs of the store and the toys with her cell phone. She selected the seven best images and then posted them to her Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Hive accounts.

Victoria bounced as she walked into the workroom and sat on the chair beside Anya. She giggled. It was
