Transcript of the interview with Anna McPhearson

5th July 1975

In two weeks I hadn’t seen or heard anything of Steve. I knew that Armageddon was coming and it would arrive very soon, but the day-to-day worries of feeding myself and paying the bills were mounting lots of pressure on me that I just didn’t need. Without any sign at all from Steve, the mortgage payments and utilities bills built up and I didn’t have any cash to pay them with. I started to worry that I would be homeless and penniless way before the New Kingdom arrived.

Then at the Kingdom Hall I got word from someone that works at the same place as Steve that he had finally returned to work. He was well, and living a few miles away, although details were hazy at first about where and who with. I wrote a letter to Steve asking about getting some money for the bills as the house was under his name and I passed it to the Brother at the Kingdom Hall to pass onto Steve at work.

Steve wouldn’t write a letter back to me; instead he just sent word that he would pay the house bills until I found somewhere else to live. He wasn’t going to support me with food money; he passed on that it was up to me for find my own way for things like that.

I had to spend an age trying to find a way of getting welfare support from the government just to get some food. It was a nightmare. Even though I didn’t want to, the welfare system was trying to push me down the legal divorce route in order to show that I was no longer dependent on my husband. But without a direct communication with Steve, I was struggling to get any resolve at all. Mary was a great help and she gave me bits of cash and food quite regularly. Although I was frustrated that I couldn’t talk to Steve, it didn’t stop me worrying that each evening he might turn up at home and we might start rowing and fighting all over again. Being on my own, and that constant threat of violence, was nerve racking and frightening. Add to that the perpetual need to watch for every piece of world news. On one hand I was desperate for Armageddon to just hurry up and arrive and on the other hand, like everyone in the congregation, I was nervous about whether I would make the grade; whether I was a good enough person to make it through.

The Elders decided that they needed to find out if Steve was committing adultery and be held accountable for it. It made me laugh and also made me quite sad that they wouldn’t listen to me when it was me that brought it up, but then later they were all of a sudden interested again when they decided. The change in the world news and the fulfilment of prophecy that showed that Armageddon was imminent had speeded up plans in the congregation.
